Who Is Dic Aberdaron?

We were walking part of the Wales Coast Path this week and we came across this random memorial plaque in honour of “Dic Aberdaron”.  We had no idea who this person was, but we thought he must be of some importance to warrant such an honour!  So I investigated.

Dic Aberdaron was born in 1780 and used to live on the Llyn Peninsula.  He had no formal education, but he had a love of languages. He was able to speak 14 different languages – all self taught.  His father was a carpenter and fisherman and in those days it was presumed that Dic would follow in his father’s trade.  But no, Dic was more interested in reading and when he was caught reading he was given a jolly good thrashing by his father!  So when he was in his 20s Dic left home and set off on his travels, walking the country doing odd jobs here and there for vicars and learned men – being paid in books.

Apparently he wore an old army coat with pockets full of books, was followed by cats and he had a hat made of rabbit fur (with the ears sticking up) and when he entered his home town of St Asaph he would blow a French Horn….aargh the Good Old Days!!
